Aviation is infrastructure, like road transport, train transport and shipping, and thus an important prerequisite for economic development. If the economy grows, the demand for transport and, consequently, the demand for air traffic increases. The growth of aviation should therefore be seen in context. If our society desires economic growth, aviation must also be allowed to grow. Limiting aviation adversely affects economic growth. The availability of air transport is a prerequisite for economic development, the amount of transport needed is a consequence of that development.
Proximity to an aviation network or at least aviation services is an important factor determining the location of businesses. Furthermore the aviation industry generates 29 million jobs worldwide, both directly and indirectly, and contributes 2.4% of GNP. Forty percent in value of the total global flow of goods takes place through the air. The speed of this mode of transport is essential for produce that spoils quickly, such as cut flowers and newspapers. Furthermore aviation enables people to travel to distant parts of the world for holidays and get to know these parts and the people living there and it enables them to stay in touch with friends and relatives even when they live far away.

In Europe, consumers can choose among a number of large airports, like Heathrow, Charles de Gaulle, Frankfurt and Schiphol, and among smaller airports that offer a connection to many destinations worldwide, or they can choose regional airports that offer mainly European destinations. These are mostly used by charter companies and other point-to-point operators, offering direct flights to many destinations in Europe. Consumers may opt for regional airports on the basis of better accessibility, shorter distances between home and airport, more relaxed atmosphere and better parking facilities.
