About SANE

Sustainable Aviation Network Europe (SANE)
SANE, Sustainable Aviation Network Europe, is an independent NGO. For the users of aviation we promote the sustainable availability of the required amount of aviation.

Our basic position is that, as aviation is infrastructure, you need to have it potentially available to enable economic development. The actual amount of aviation is a consequence of economic development.

If society requires more aviation, the aviation sector should be able to accommodate this request. The same society has the right to demand that aviation services are provided with the smallest possible environmental footprint. This is what the aviation sector should be held accountable for.

We as society can be justifiably proud of the aviation system we have created. It is an extremely safe, very flexible and highly efficient part of the infrastructure of our modern society. Without it the world as we know it would not be possible. Aviation has brought the world together, as was hoped by the world leaders at the end of the Second World War, who wrote in the preamble of the Chicago Convention (1944) “the future development of international civil aviation can greatly help to create and preserve friendship and understanding among the nations and peoples of the world”.

Aviation must be sustainable to remain available as needed, both now and in the long term future. Therefore the footprint of aviation, both in CO2 emission and in sound annoyance, should be kept as small as is reasonably achievable.

A balanced common sense approach based on facts is necessary to achieve this. Only then will the built-in efficiency drivers of aviation be able to develop their full potential. SANE can help by providing information in ready to use format and by organizing public support..

What inspired us
We live today in a ‘mediacracy’ in Europe. The public are looking for news reports with emotional value and media that want to stay in business have no choice but to oblige, sometimes appearing to pay less attention to the accuracy of reported facts. Based on emotion-driven news reporting, people form perceptions which politicians in our democratic society quite often have to act upon. For instance by proposing policies based on those perceptions. This might lead to ineffective policy, causing new problems and emotions SANE seeks to break this vicious circle as far as it concerns aviation by providing accurate facts and solid analysis. People may still disagree on the benefits and drawbacks of aviation, but if accurate facts underlie their opinions debate and decisions will at least have a healthy foundation.
