Theme: Sound

Apart from the benefits that aviation brings, there are of course also drawbacks. Although there are people who actually enjoy the sound of an airplane, it is a fact that airplane sound constitutes one of the biggest problems of aviation. Whenever there is a discussion about aviation, the topic that frequently comes up is the annoyance that is experienced by people living in the vicinity of airports. This annoyance is however not caused exclusively by the sound itself. In other words, the presence of sound is not the same thing as noise annoyance. Factors that are at least as important are of a non-acoustic nature, such as a person’s attitude towards the source of the sound and the degree of control he or she can exert on his or her own living environment.

The major airports are the focus of a large number of research studies on sound and noise, the reason being that these airports are involved in the majority of flights in Europe and by their very nature more often than not have densely populated areas as neighbours. Also, policies that are adopted in major airports often serve as a guideline for other European airports. However, major airports may differ in many respects from each other and from regional airports and conditions are not always comparable. This needs to be acknowledged when developing policies. The insights and mechanisms will be the same, but their application needs to be tailored tot the local situation.
